According to a March 2009, UW Colleges survey, 33% of students described themselves as non-drinkers. 60% of students reported that they consumed on average 0-4 drinks per week. Even though the majority of UWC students drink responsibly or not at all, there are still some students (approximately 1/3) who engage in high-risk drinking. High-risk drinkers are significantly more likely to experience negative consequences as a result of their choice to drink excessively.
e-Chug is an online alcohol assessment for students that is completely free and confidential. The e-Chug survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and feedback is immediately given. You can see how your drinking compares to that of other UW Colleges students and you can even find out how many extra calories you consume if you choose to drink! If you are concerned about your results or have questions, please contact Wendy Seegers.

The fairly new alcoholic energy drink, Four Loko, has been getting a lot of media attention lately. Concerns about this product stem from the combination of alcohol and stimulants, primarily caffeine. While consumers become impaired from the alcohol (approximately 4 servings per can), they are less likely to notice the effects due to the stimulant effects of the caffeine. The caffeine causes the drinkers to be more alert and active, because of this they are more likely to keep drinking. Numerous overdoses have resulted from the over-consumption of Four Loko and products like it.
On November 17th 2010, the FDA sent a notice to Phusion Inc., the maker of Four Loko, stating that the caffeine must be removed from the product or it would be banned. The company agreed to the change. However, Four Loko will still contain several servings of alcohol per can, so students need to be aware of how much they are consuming. One can does NOT equal one drink!
