Step 3. Your Future: Careers & Associations

English

Explore Our Department

Over 100 department members teach courses in Rhetoric and Composition, Literature, Creative Writing, and Applied Writing. The English Department of the UW Colleges includes faculty and staff who are specialists in drama, poetry, literacy narratives, and creative nonfiction; medieval literature, Renaissance literature, 20th-century American literature; specific authors such as Robert Frost, James Joyce, Toni Morrison, George Gissing, and Ernest Hemingway; English, Irish, American, and multicultural literature; sports literature, science fiction, film, romance novels, and detective novels. We have New Historicists, feminists, composition theorists, postcolonialists, cultural studies theorists, and a few New Critics.

What unites this diverse group of scholars is teaching: our mission is to provide students with both the general education and disciplinary knowledge and skills that prepare all students for degree programs and life-long learning. Students at any of the thirteen UW Colleges campuses and in the UW Colleges Online Program may take introductory and intermediate courses in English as they work towards the Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in the UW Colleges or towards an English minor or a bachelor's degree in English or English Education at one of the UW System comprehensive universities or elsewhere.
