Engaging Students in the First Year

Engaging Students in the First Year (ESFY) is a Colleges-wide initiative to help students transition to college by maximizing academic success, fostering positive relationships among faculty, staff and students and providing appropriate campus resources.

The ESFY initiative began as a series of discussions about addressing the needs of diverse student populations, student engagement in the first year of college, and new structures for exploring student engagement.

The ESFY Initiative was officially implemented in the Fall 2003 semester with a one credit First Year seminar class and planning assessment of this course, including the EBI First Year Initiative Survey. Since then, ESFY has grown beyond the First Year Seminar by creating links with other courses, encouraging all faculty and staff to consider their role in helping students make the transition to college, and expanding into co-curricular programming.
