Course Support Specialist

General Description

The University of Wisconsin Colleges Online is seeking candidates for the position of Course Support Specialist for its growing program. Areas of responsibility for this position include maintenance of existing courses, minor course revisions, live course support and related duties.  The Course Support Specialist works in the Instructional Design unit of the University of Wisconsin Colleges Online and reports to the Senior Instructional Designer. The position is located in Madison, Wisconsin and requires physical presence at that location. Occasional travel to University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses may be required.

Required Duties

  • 60% Maintenance of Existing Courses
    • Work collaboratively with UW Colleges instructors to maintain existing courses already developed in the Learning Management System (LMS)
    • Create and maintain new sections of courses before semester launch
    • Implement minor revisions as required for existing courses (textbook updates, instructor requests, etc.)
    • Use student and instructor feedback to make improvements to existing courses
    • Perform other activities related to course revisions and accessibility as directed by the Senior Instructional Designer
  • 20% Live Course Support
    • Work collaboratively with UW Colleges instructors and the UW Colleges Online Help Desk Manager to trouble-shoot issues in live courses
    • Work collaboratively with UW Colleges instructors to correct errors and omissions in live courses
    • Create Web-based materials for faculty and student support sites
    • Beta-test and document new LMS functionality
  • 10%  Textbook Management and Support
    • Work with the UW Colleges Online textbook vendor  to order and track textbooks and software for all UW Colleges Online courses and Distance Education courses.
    • Work collaboratively with UW Colleges instructors to establish timelines for adopting new textbook editions.
    • Support students and UW Colleges instructors with textbook related issues.
  • 10%  Related Duties
    • Keep abreast of changes in ADA developments and changes to the LMS.
    • Serve on committees as requested by the Senior Instructional designer.
    • Participate in UW Colleges Online team meetings and prepare reports as requested.
    • Participate in professional development activities within and outside of UW Colleges.
    • Perform other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work in a production-oriented environment
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing projects and meet established schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to work as a team player and communicate effectively and efficiently with other personnel
  • Ability to work well with supervisors, coworkers, and other members of the University community and also work  independently
  • Excellent consultative skills in working with instructors to update online courses
  • Ability to think clearly, creatively and logically to solve problems
  • Working knowledge of an LMS
  • Knowledge of HTML coding
  • Knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Qualifications (required)

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience supporting online courses using an LMS

Qualifications (preferred)

  • Three to five years of experience with online courses and Desire to Learn (D2L )
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with adult students
  • A commitment to online learning and higher education
