Title:    Coordinator of Nontraditional Student Services and Retention

100% annual non-instructional academic staff position

Position Summary: Responsible for academic and transfer advising and retention services, including those for adult, minority,probationary and other nontraditional students. Oversee all aspects of Career Services.  Position reports to the Associate Director of Student Services for Student Development.

Responsibilities:

Retention

  • Assess individual students' academic needs in relation to preparation for post-secondary education. Refer students to the UW-Waukesha Study Center for developmental skills or study skills assistance or provide study skills training for nontraditional and at-risk students.
  • Assess individual students' personal needs in relation to success in post-secondary education. Refer to relevant community support services.
  • Design and implement workshops aimed at enhancing student retention.
  • Create a nontraditional student support organization.
  • Develop mechanisms to track student academic performance, persistence, and actual transfer data.Develop and maintain student retention data for at-risk and the general student population.
  • Act as a resource person for UW-Waukesha campus community including faculty, staff, and student organizations to develop and improve adult student programming.

Academic Advising

  • Provide on-going academic advising to students on an individual and group basis.
  • Provide counseling and referral as appropriate for personal concerns.
  • Provide academic advising and special programming for probationary students.
  • Meet with incoming transfer students regarding credit transfer.
  • Coordinate and develop other advisement projects as assigned by the Associate Director of Student Services for Student Development.
  • Participate in the training of faculty & staff advisors as assigned by the Associate Director of Student Services for Student Development.
  • Participate in the Advising & Registration and Orientation programs for new freshmen and the programs geared specifically to adult, minority, and other non-traditional students.

Career Services

  • Assist undecided students by providing career planning and exploration opportunities, including use of the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory.
  • Provide transfer advising sessions and information.  Work with 4 year institutions to keep information current.
  • Coordinate transfer and career exploration materials available to students.
  • Coordinate the Education & Transfer Fair each semester.
  • Update the UWM Transfer Guides each semester.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling, Student Personnel or related discipline.  Masters degree must be confirmed no later than June 1, 2012.
  • Minimum two years of higher education experience in advising, preferablyworking with non-traditional students and at-risk student populations and delivering programs related to academic success
  • Knowledge of career assessment tools, such as the MBTI or the Strong Interest Inventory
  • Knowledge and skills in working with appropriate technology and data base management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to team building
  • Excellent oral and written skills, including the ability to provide clear and concise directions
  • High energy and creativity in program development
  • Ability to work in a multifaceted student services program

SALARY:  Full time annual appointment with a salary rate of $44,984 at the Student Services Coordinator level. 

THE CAMPUS:  The UW-Waukesha is located in Waukesha, WI, which is 20 miles west of Milwaukee.  With an enrollment of approximately 2000 students, it is the largest of the thirteen University of Wisconsin freshman-sophomore campuses located throughout the state.
