Federal Benefits:  General Eligibility and Documents Required  

Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

General Eligibility:  Served minimum 90 days on active duty after September 10, 2001. 
 
Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services
  • DD214 – Member 4
  • Certification of Eligibility (COE)
  • Kicker or Buy up Contracts (if applicable) 

Reserve Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 1606)

General Eligibility:  National Guard or Reserve members on active duty for training purposes only.  Contact your Unit to verify eligibility.

Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services

  • DD214 – Member 4
  • Certification of Eligibility (COE) or Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
  • Kicker or Buy up Contracts (if applicable) 

Students must verify their enrollment monthly by Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE)or by Interactive Voice Response (IVER).  The earliest a student can verify their enrollment is the last calendar day of each month.  WAVE is the VA’s preferred and most efficient verification method.  Verifications are processed within 2 business days.  As an alternative, IVR allows students to verify enrollment via phone at 877-823-2378.  

Reserve Educational Assistance program (Chapter 1607)

General Eligibility:  Member served on active duty after September 10, 2001 in support of a contingency operation for at least 90 consecutive days. Contact your Unit to verify eligibility.

Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)

General Eligibility:  Entered active duty after July 1, 1985 and contributed $100 per month to the MGIB for 12 months to the Montgomery GI Bill.

Survivors and Dependents Assistance 

(Chapter 35 or Fry Scholarship)

General Eligibility: Dependent or spouse of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition or a dependent or spouse of a veteran who died in the line of duty or as a result of a service-connected condition.

Vocational Rehabilitation Program (Chapter 31) 

General Eligibility: Any service member or veteran eligible for a Federal VA education benefit.  The process for receiving Chapter 31 is initiated at the Veterans Administration.  Contact your Case Manager to initiate benefits under this program
 
Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services
  • The VA Case Manager will submit a Form 28-1905 to UW Colleges Veterans Services Office on behalf of the student.  

Tuition Assistance

General Eligibility:  Available to active duty or Reserve service members.  Contact your Unit Education Representative for more information.

Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services

  • Tuition Assistance Authorization Form for each requested course.  

State Benefits:  General Eligibility and Documents Required 

Wisconsin GI Bill

General Eligibility:  If you entered the service as a Wisconsin resident, or have been a Wisconsin resident for 5 years and served 90 days active duty, you may qualify for the Wisconsin GI Bill. Check with County Veteran Service Office for eligibility.
 
Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services:
  • DD214 – Member 4
  • WDVA 2029 (UW System Application for WI GI Bill)
  • WDVA 2030 (WDVA Application for WI GI Bill)
  • Birth Certificate (for dependent of veterans)
  • Marriage Certificate (for spouse of veteran or dependent step-child of veteran)
  • WDVA 2031 (Certification for Wisconsin GI Bill Benefits) 

National Guard Tuition Grant 

General Eligibility: Members of the WI National Guard may receive 100% tuition reimbursement while earning their first bachelor’s degree. 
 
Submit to UW Colleges Veterans Services: 
  • National Guard Tuition Grant Application (submitted within 90 days of last date of each term) 

Veterans Educational Program

Eligible veterans may use for tuition reimbursement at UW or technical schools up to first Bachelor’s degree. Veterans may apply through the County Veterans Services Office.
